The Outeniqua Hiking Trail
Av Hiking Time: 6 hours.
Highlights: AMAZING view! Wonderful museum nearby the hut.
Be prepared for: Steep climb.
Be prepared for a big uphill! This is very steep but worth the view! Make sure you stop and get a look around when you reach the peak.
Probably the most scenic day so far. After you descend from the peak you will enter a beautiful forest walk! (Keep an eye open for elephant dung!)
There is one last uphill before the Diepwalle hut but the hut is worth it with electricity and hot water showers (they were being worked on March 2014 so we only had cold water - please update me if they are still only cold).
There is a great community tea garden right next door to the hut. For larger meals hikers must have pre-ordered the meal the night before. If not they do serve toasted sandwiches, small burgers etc. (Open to 3pm. Closed Sundays unless in holiday season). PLEASE DO NOT RELY ON THIS SERVICE!
A wonderful museum nearby will keep you occupied the entire afternoon!
There is an electrical power point in the hut so you can charge your cell phones.
Tips for Day 6:
- Spend some time at the peak of the trail enjoying the view - it really is one of the best views of the entire trail.
- Keep some cash handy and try get to the hut before 3pm before the tea garden closes.
- Make sure you check out the museum near the tea garden. Well worth the visit as it tells the story of the old woodcutters.
- Also you can watch a DVD on the elusive Knysna Forest elephants.
