The Outeniqua Hiking Trail

WILDERNESS, GARDEN ROUTE, SOUTH AFRICA
Distance: 108 km.
Length: 8 days.
Terrain: Mountains (non technical), Forest, Plantations.
Difficulty: 7 out of 10 due to time on feet.
Max group size: 24 people.

BRIEF OVERVIEW

The trail is one of the toughest multiday trails in South Africa because of the time spent on your feet - and average of 16km per day.

Although some sections will take you across the Outeniqua mountains there are no technical sections where you will need rope, mountaineering equipment etc.

The trail is well marked with footprints that point in the direction that you must follow. On the last few days these footprints also contain distance in km travelled. (Sanparks will post you a map prior to the start - makes sure you get this and familiarise yourself with the route).

There are overnight huts at each stop, all except one have flushing toilets and three of the 8 huts have hot water. All have excellent covered braai/BBQ areas with wood and an axe.

Rainwater tanks provide drinking water at the huts, but don’t rely on this. Fill up from the many river crossings en route (ensuring you have water purification tablets). Cell phone connection is patchy.

The trail has some wonderful mountain views and amazing forest sections. The forest sections amount to around 65% of the trail.

Use the menu on the right to find out what each day has in store for you.
