The first day takes you from the Storms River reception to Ngubu huts. Note that the hike starts at the reception and not down at the coast as it used to be. It takes you through the shady forest down, steeply in places, to the coastal trail where some “rock hopping” is called for.
Be careful here because of the full packs and possible injury.
The trail takes you past a beautiful waterfall. (Storms River day hikers are permitted up to this point). After rains, this river becomes your first obstacle. The Ngubu huts are only a short distance further.
Tips for Day 1:
- Take some meat for a braai (BBQ). The meat will keep and the distance is relatively short for the extra weight. The huts are all equipped with braai areas and Sanparks keeps a good supply of wood underneath the huts.
- Don't forget firelights.
- Swim at the waterfall. The huts are not too much further so there is no rush to get there.
